Small country in the Caucasus - bordered by Caspian Sea on the East, Georgia and Armenia on the West, Iran in the South and Russia in the North; population - 9.5 mln; rich in oil and gas, yet about half of the population lives in poverty - very low salary for locals, even hard to find a decent job.
Very rich in cuisine - if you ever visit Azerbaijan you must try levengi, all sorts of dolmas (yarpaq (leaf), kelem (cauliflower), tomato-pepper-eggplant), pilaf, gutab, tendir choreyi (special kind of bread made in special kinds of pits), dushbara, khingal, etc; desserts - pakhlava, shakarbura, goghal, Garabagh ketesi, etc.
Beautiful scenery in the regions (and inexpensive accommodations are available) - Guba, Gusar, Davachi, Ismayilli, Gakh, Oghuz, Shaki, Balakan, Zagatala, Lankaran, Lerik, Masalli, Ganja. The city center of Baku and the historical part of it called "Old City"; however, Baku is very expensive, as a tourist, you would spend around 100-150 USD a day for food, accommodation and transportation.

Public transportation is extremely cheap in Azerbaijan (except for taxis).
